Inseamna: ‘Este in ordine. Este ok. Corect.’ That’s okay. That’s acceptable. ‘Fair enough.’Ex.

Raspunsul potrivit aici este:

‘Fair enough.’ poate pune capat unei discutii in contradictoriu. (You can always stop an argument saying: Fair enough.)

Not fussed – not bothered.

‘Not fussed‘ este sinonim cu ‘Not bothered‘ si inseamna ca nu te deranjeaza, nu ai preferinte. Esti de acord cu oricare dintre variante.

Daca nu poti lua decizii si esti de acord cu oricare dintre variante, poti spune:

  • Not fussed – not bothered.

Este sinonim cu: ‘I’m easy.‘ (It is used for saying that you will accept any choice or decision that someone else makes.)

I’m afraid – sens si folosire

The basic meaning is ‘I’m scared’ but you can use it to say:

  • I’m sorry but…

You can say No or refuse someone politely by saying:

  • I’m afraid I can’t. I’ve got other plans.

I’m afraid not’ este varianta scurta pentru: ‘I’m afraid I can’t.’ or ‘I’m afraid I don’t.’ Ex.

  • Do you know where the box is? Stii unde este cutia?
  • ‘I’m afraid I don’t.’ sau ‘I’m afraid not.’ Nu. Mi-e teama ca nu.
  • Can you come over for dinner? Poti veni la noi la cina?
  • I’m afraid I can’t. sau I’m afraid not.

Cand mai folosim ‘I’m afraid’?

Poti folosi pe ‘I’m afraid‘ cand oferim informatii sau vesti nu tocmai bune.  (You can give information which is usually bad news.) Ex.

  • I’m afraid we can’t go shopping today. I have to do overtime work today. Maybe we can do it tomorrow…
  • I’m afraid we’re gonna have to cut our meeting short.

Suppose so. I suppose so.

I don’t see why not. You can simply say: Yeah. Why not? I suppose so.

‘Suppose’ inseamna ca credem ca ceva este probabil adevarat. Nu sunt sigur. Probabil asa este.

(It means that I think, believe or imagine that something is probably true. I’m not sure.)

Poti exprima motivul sau cauza probabila pentru ceva ce s-a intamplat. (You can explain the probable reason why something happened.) Ex.

  • Why doesn’t she want to come outside to play? I suppose she’s busy with her homework.
  • Why is he so happy today? I suppose he’s won the lottery.

Putem da o explicatie posibila pentru ceva ce s-a intamplat in trecut. (We can give a possible explanation for something which happened.)

  • Why didn’t she answer the phone yesterday? I suppose she was having a shower.

Poti folosi ‘That’ sau nu. In vorbire, ‘that’, de obicei se omite.

Poti folosi ‘suppose’ cand esti suparat/a poti spune: (When you’re annoyed or frustrated about something, you can say:)

  • I suppose you have done your homework. That’s why are playing games on your phone now.

Cand cineva a intarziat din nou, poti spune:

  • You’re late. I suppose you missed your bus again.
I suppose so. Suppose.

Poti folosi ‘Suppose’ ca raspuns cand nu prea esti de acord cu ceva dar in final, spui ok. (You agree reluctantly to something.)
Cand nu prea vrem sa spunem ‘Da’, putem spune: ‘I suppose so’. (When we don’t really want to say ‘yes’, we say: ‘I suppose so.’)

  • Can I stay late tonight? It’s my birthday?

Instead of saying:

  • Yes, you can stay late tonight. You simply say: I suppose so.
  • Can I have my phone back now? I’ve done all my homework. Raspuns: I suppose so.
  • The book is very good. I really liked it. Did you like the book? Raspuns: I suppose so.
Polite request

Folosim pe suppose, la negative,  cu ”don’t’  ‘I don’t suppose that…’

  • I don’t suppose that I could borrow your car. As putea imprumuta masina ta?
  • I don’t suppose you could lend me some money. Ai putea sa-mi imprumuti niste bani?
  • I don’t suppose you could carry my bag. Ai putea sa-mi duci geanta?
Suppose – What if?

Suppose‘ folosit ca sugestie, are sensul lui ‘what if?’

  • Suppose we walk home? Mergem pe jos acasa?
  • Suppose we meet on Monday? Ne intalnim luni?

Supposed to +verb la trecut

Poate fi folosit cu verb la trecut si atunci sensul va fi mai putin sigur. Sensul este asemanator cu cel exprimat de Conditional II.

  • Suppose we talked to her? Daca am vorbi cu ea?
  • Suppose we found the book? Presupunand ca/Daca am gasi cartea?
  • Suppose we met them and asked them?Daca ne-am intalni cu ei si i-am intreba?

Supposed to- obligatie sau aranjament

Poti folosi ‘supposed to‘ pentru a exprima obligatie, aranjament sau program. ex.

  • Why are in at home? You’re supposed to be at/in school. Daca esti acasa? Nu trebuie sa fii la scoala?
  • Isn’t he supposed to fix the kitchen sink first? Nu ar trebui sa repare chiuveta de la bucatarie, mai intai?
  • Why are watching TV? You’re supposed to be doing your homework. De ce te uiti la tv? Ar trebui sa-ti faci temele acum.
Supposed to – la trecut was/were+supposed to

‘Supposed to‘ folosit cu ‘Be’ la trecut: was/were, se foloseste cand exprimi ceva ce ar fi trebuit sa se intample. Ex.

  • He was supposed to be here at ten. Trebuia sa fie aici la 10. (dar evident, nu a fost.)
  • You were supposed to send me an email. Trebuia sa imi trimita 1 email. ( dar nu mi-a trimis.)
Supposed to – Beliefs and expectations

Exprimi faptul ca toata lumea crede ceva sau se asteapta ca ceva sa fie sau sa functioneze intr-un fel acceptat de majoritate.

  • The new laptop is supposed to be very good. Noul laptop este considerat a fi foarte bun.
  • The new vaccine is supposed to kill the virus. Se crede ca noul vaccin distruge virusul.
  • I haven’t seen that city and it is supposed to be very beautiful. Nu am vazut acel oras si este considerat unul frumos.
  • I have a meeting with the manager. He is supposed to be very friendly. Am intalnire cu managerul. Pare (considerat) a fi prietenos.
